Making Tax Digital: Clearing up the most common myths
Making Tax Digital can feel like yet another layer of admin for already busy business owners, and it’s no surprise many people worry it will make running their business harder. But with the right systems and support in place, MTD can actually simplify your financial processes, reduce errors and give you clearer visibility over your numbers. At DS Business Support, we help clients transition smoothly, turning what feels like a challenge into an opportunity to streamline and strengthen your bookkeeping. The 5 Most Common MTD Myths — debunked:
Myth 1: “MTD applies to everyone in Self Assessment”
Not everyone is required to join straight away. MTD is being phased in based on turnover: £50k+ from April 2026, £30k+ from April 2027 and £20k+ from April 2028. If you’re unsure where you fall, DS Business Support can help you check your status.
Myth 2: “I’ll have to pay tax every quarter”
MTD changes how you report, not when you pay. Tax payment deadlines remain the same, typically 31 January and 31 July. Quarterly updates are simply summaries, and we can handle these for you.
Myth 3: “I’ll need to submit a full tax return every three months”
Quarterly updates are not full tax returns. You’ll still complete one final declaration each year, similar to the current Self Assessment process.
Myth 4: “I can’t use spreadsheets anymore”
You can still use spreadsheets, they just need to link to HMRC compatible bridging software. As a Xero Gold Partner, we help clients choose the right digital setup, whether that’s full cloud software or a hybrid approach.
Myth 5: “I need to join MTD as soon as my income goes over the threshold”
If your income crosses the threshold mid‑year, you don’t join immediately. You’ll be required to join from the next tax year, and HMRC will notify you.
The truth is, MTD doesn’t have to be complicated, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. With the right digital tools and a supportive bookkeeping partner, the transition becomes far easier than most people expect. DS Business Support is here to guide you through every step, from software setup to quarterly submissions, ensuring you stay compliant, confident and in control.
